About Me

Julie Thompson

 Julie Thompson

Julie Thompson is a Canadian author who writes picture books and middle-grade readers. Born to a mother of Barbadian descent, Julie remembers being introduced to literature at a young age. One of Julie's fondest memories as a child was bedtime stories with her mom while they snuggled in bed.

When Julie had children of her own and started introducing them to literature, she found it challenging to find books with diverse characters and stories.

"It seemed until recently; the industry was not interested in publishing #ownvoices stories." "It is important that the literature reflects all children." "When writing, my goal is to create stories that mirror the unique experiences children have, as well as the diverse world in which we live."

In addition to writing, Julie is employed full-time as a police officer. She is a youth communication specialist, having conducted over 5000 presentations spanning over 11 years.

In 2018, The City of Markham honoured Julie for her outstanding work with youth within the Black Community.
